How much does a private ADHD assessment cost

Illustration of the parts that make up a private ADHD assessment cost: assessment, report, follow-up and titration.

The cost of a private ADHD assessment in the UK varies widely by provider, the depth of the assessment, and whether follow-up and medication titration are included. Prices are not standardised, so the most useful step is to ask each provider for the total cost of getting to a stable diagnosis and treatment plan, not just the headline fee. The NHS and NHS Right to Choose routes are free. This is information, not medical advice.

Information only. We do not publish a price figure because private fees are not standardised and change over time. Always get a current written quote from the provider.

What you are paying for

A private ADHD assessment fee usually covers a clinical interview with a qualified clinician, the use of structured tools, and a written report or outcome. Some providers bundle in follow-up; others charge for it separately. The fee reflects clinician time and the depth of the assessment, so a thorough assessment that meets recognised standards, such as NICE NG87, will reasonably cost more than a brief one.

Costs people forget to budget for

How to compare fairly

Ask each provider the same questions: what the fee includes, whether a report and follow-up are part of it, who carries out the assessment, and how medication and shared care would work afterwards. Then weigh the total against the free NHS routes. Our NHS vs private comparison sets out the trade-offs, and how to find a provider covers what to check.

Frequently asked questions

Why do private ADHD assessment prices vary so much?

Price depends on the clinician, the length and depth of the assessment, whether titration and follow-up are included, and the provider's overheads. A higher price does not always mean a better assessment, and a lower price is not always worse. Compare what is included, not just the headline fee.

What should the fee include?

Check whether the quoted fee covers the full assessment, a written report, and any follow-up. Some providers price the assessment and the later medication titration separately, so ask for the total cost of getting to a stable point, not just the first appointment.

Are there ongoing costs after a private diagnosis?

There can be. If you start medication privately, you may pay for follow-up appointments and prescriptions until any NHS shared-care arrangement is agreed, which is not guaranteed. Ask the provider and your GP how ongoing care and cost would work.

Is a free NHS route available instead?

Yes. The standard NHS route and NHS Right to Choose in England are free at the point of use. People usually choose private assessment to reduce waiting time rather than to get a better assessment.
