DLA for children with ADHD
Children under 16 with ADHD can qualify for Disability Living Allowance (DLA), paid to the parent or carer, worth between £30.30 and £194.60 a week in 2026/27 (the top figure is the highest care rate of £114.60 plus the higher mobility rate of £80.00 combined), tax free and not means tested. The test is comparative: does your child need substantially more care, attention or supervision than other children the same age without a disability. A diagnosis is not required to claim, which matters given assessment waiting lists. At 16 the child moves to the adult PIP test.

The test is "more than other children the same age"
Every young child needs supervision, so the DLA test is comparative: substantially more care or supervision than a typical child of the same age. For ADHD, the persuasive evidence is the delta, described concretely: a 9 year old who cannot be left alone in a room with anything breakable; an hour of prompting to dress and eat before school where a sibling takes ten minutes; homework requiring one-to-one supervision throughout; road-safety awareness years behind; bedtime taking two hours of settling, every night.
The claim form is long and asks about a typical day. Write it like a diary, hour by hour, and get supporting letters from school, the SENCO, or any professional involved. The lower rate of mobility can apply from age 5 where a child can walk but needs substantially more guidance or supervision outdoors than peers; the care components can apply from age 3 months.
Claiming while on the assessment waiting list
You do not need to wait for a diagnosis, and awards are made on needs, not labels. Include referral letters and school evidence of the difficulties. At 16: the move to PIP
Shortly before 16 the DWP writes inviting a PIP claim (Adult Disability Payment in Scotland). The adult test is points-based and different in character: it scores specific activities rather than comparing to peers. Can you get DLA for a child with ADHD?
Yes. DLA for children has no list of qualifying conditions: the test is whether the child needs substantially more looking after, supervision or help than other children of the same age without a disability. ADHD claims typically evidence constant supervision needs, support with routines, meals, washing and homework, night-time settling, and safety awareness issues.
How much is DLA for a child with ADHD?
In 2026/27 the care component is £30.30 (lowest), £76.70 (middle) or £114.60 (highest) a week, and the mobility component is £30.30 (lower) or £80.00 (higher). The amount depends on the level of extra care and supervision the child needs, not on the diagnosis. There is no separate ADHD rate.
Does my child need a diagnosis first?
No. You can claim while on an assessment waiting list, and with CAMHS waits running long, many families do. Evidence of the difficulties (school reports, SENCO letters, referral letters, your own detailed diary) matters more than the formal label. If the claim is refused pre-diagnosis, you can claim again or challenge once the diagnosis lands.
What happens when my child turns 16?
DLA ends and they are invited to claim PIP (or Adult Disability Payment in Scotland), which uses a different, points-based adult test. The invitation letter matters: respond within the deadline or payments stop. Our adult PIP pages cover the new test they will face.
Does DLA affect other help?
A DLA award can increase means-tested benefits through disabled child additions, and a parent providing 35 or more hours of care a week may be able to claim Carer’s Allowance (£86.45 a week in 2026/27) if the child gets the middle or highest care rate. DLA itself is tax free and not means tested.
